B. St. Michael Hylton K.C. was admitted to practice in Jamaica in 1976, in England and Wales in 1995 and in the Bahamas (by special admission) and in Trinidad and Tobago in 2010. He was appointed Queens Counsel in 1995 and served as Solicitor General of Jamaica between 2001 and 2007.

Mr. Hylton has extensive experience and expertise in complex commercial matters, especially involving financial institutions and instruments, constitutional and administrative law and intellectual property. He specializes in advocacy with a particular focus on Privy Council appeals (having successfully argued more than 25 appeals).

He was the Chairman of the General Legal Council of Jamaica from 2010 – 2016; Chairman of Private Sector Organization committee on the reform of insolvency legislation from 2011 – 2015; Chairman Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority from 2012 – 2016; Member of the Regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission since 2016; and he has also chaired regional regulatory bodies including the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force and the Commission of Experts, Inter-American Convention Against Corruption.

Mr. Hylton also taught the Law of Evidence and Civil Practice and Procedure at the Norman Manley Law School for 30 years.

Mr. Vishnu Deonarine is the Senior Partner (Conveyancing Department) in our Firm and a Notary Public with over forty (40) years of experience.

He specializes in the preparation and review of contracts, leases, assurances related to conveyances, rectifications, releases and securities (e.g. debentures and mortgages) on behalf of commercial and private clients. He has earned a wealth of knowledge and garnered vast experience in Corporate Law and Conveyancing with a keen grasp on the legal aspects of corporate finance including loan facilities, project financing, bond issues, and mergers and acquisitions.

Previously serving as President/Chairman of Trinidad Oilfield Services and Contractors Association Limited for a number of years, Mr. Deonarine has extensive expertise in the negotiation and preparation of contracts and agreements including: Heads of Agreement; Memoranda of Understanding; Shareholders’ Agreements; Joint Venture Agreements; Processing Marketing and Distribution Agreements; Technical Services Agreements; Data Exchange and Technology Transfer Agreements; Engineering Procurement and Construction Agreements; Confidentiality Agreements; and Leasing Programmes connected with the Oil Industry in Trinidad.

He is known for his quick-witted approach during the negotiation and conclusion of any transaction and is a sharp strategist often finding the most practical solutions for the Firm’s clients without crossing the boundaries of the Law and without attracting risk to clients.

Mr. Deonarine is a former Commissioner of the Water and Sewerage Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (appointed by the Minister of Public Utilities) and was a former Chairman of Taurus Services Limited (appointed by the Ministry of Finance) to administer and deal with the delinquent Loan Portfolio within all State-owned Enterprises in Trinidad and Tobago. He also formally served on the Council of the South Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

As a mentor to each of the Firm’s Junior Associates, Mr. Deonarine guides by using and following his own business mantra which is geared toward the ultimate achievement of clients’ goals within the limits of the Law.

With a strong devotion to honesty, integrity, good ethics, morale, and professionalism, Mr. Deonarine leads by example and advises clients with the aforesaid tenets as the continuously tried and tested foundation of the Firm.

Mr. Prakash Deonarine was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales at Lincoln’s Inn in 1976 and admitted to practice in Trinidad and Tobago.

Shortly thereafter, Mr. Deonarine spent his first ten years in practice as a Member of the Criminal Bar, four of which were spent under the esteemed pupillage of Mr. Desmond Allum S.C.

After this ten-year period, he boldly switched his focus from practicing at the criminal bar to civil and commercial litigation. His experience practicing at the criminal bar however, provided the ideal foundation to develop and master his cross-examination skills which are now highly respected in all facets of the profession.

With now over forty (40) years of experience in the civil corporate and commercial arena, he is the head of the Litigation Department at Girwar and Deonarine having had, and presently under his purview, a host of corporate and commercial matters which involve both complex legal and factual issues.

He leads his team of Litigation Associates in various matters which deals with all aspects of civil law litigation.

Among a plethora of retainers over the years, he had appeared outside of Trinidad and Tobago at the Privy Council in his own right. He also under the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in London as a Junior Attorney to the late Dr. Fenton Ramsahoye in a construction contract which was dealt with under the ICC in London in this matter obtained judgment on behalf of their Client in the sum of USD $17,000,000.00.

In recent times (2017-2019), the firm has been engaged in extensive construction law litigation primarily based on Federation Internationale des Ingenieurs Conseils (FIDIC). Under his leadership, the firm has obtained Judgments in these matters in excess of three hundred million dollars ($300 million).

Apart from his profound knowledge of contract law and his ability to effectively manage cases to obtain judgment, he possesses the important skill set of the enforcement of Judgments. Recently, under his guidance, the firm has accomplished possibly the largest attachment of debt (garnishee) in Trinidad and Tobago (over 70 million).

His legal arguments and involvement in a multitude of matters inclusive of inter alia libel matters, banking, construction, insurance, contract, tort and judicial review have been reported in both the West Indian Reports and by the Judiciary of Trinidad and Tobago.

He has not only extended himself to the practical aspects of the legal profession but has also served as an Executive Member of the Assembly of Southern Lawyers, a member of the Disciplinary Committee of Lawyers of Trinidad and Tobago and one Government Commission of Inquiry.

In his capacity as a Senior Partner, Mr. Deonarine has received an honorary award from the San Fernando Business Association for his expertise in Law and his contribution to the community of San Fernando.

To say the least, he is a skilled negotiator with excellent communication skills of whom has, through his years of practice, developed an incisive ability to determine what is at stake between the parties. This is the distinctive quality that has very often enabled him to successfully secure the early resolution of commercial matters (where appropriate) satisfying his Clients’ underlying interests and ultimately achieving what is known as the ‘overriding objective’.

He has no doubt earned the respect of his colleagues, Senior Counsels and the high regard of many members of the Judiciary for his integrity, high standards and diligent preparation of matters under his charge.

He continues to be an invaluable asset to the Firm, its’ Clients, the Community and the Firms’ Associates, the latter of whom have the privilege of learning and training under his tenure.

Mr. Michael Kishore Kalliecharan was admitted to the Roll of Attorneys-at-Law in Trinidad and Tobago in 2001 and joined the Firm as an Associate in the Conveyancing Department with his main focus and specialization in the law of property.

His expertise is concentrated on, inter alia: mortgages; general conveyancing; the drafting and reviewing of leases and other contracts; and estate planning.

As a public speaker, Mr. Kalliecharan has given a plethora of presentations to the Firm’s multitude of commercial and corporate clients in an effort to educate corporate officers on the Law and its interpretation.

A former member of The Rotary Club of Pointe-a-Pierre, Mr. Kalliecharan continues to be actively involved in community and cultural activities outside of the Firm.

Mr. Kalliecharan remains devoted to strengthening and sustaining the Client and Attorney relationship. He is known among the G&D team for his down-to-earth and even-keeled nature which gives him the ability to easily bring calmness to moments of tension.

Mr. Vijai Deonarine was admitted to the Bar of Trinidad and Tobago in 2003. With over fifteen years of civil litigation experience, Mr. Deonarine is an Advocate Attorney and Senior Associate, working closely under the direct guidance of the Senior Litigation Partner Mr. Prakash Deonarine.

Mr. Vijai Deonarine has had litigation experience in the fields of negligence including medical negligence and employer’s liability, occupier’s liability, trusts, mortgages, contracts including construction contracts, workmen’s compensation, administration of estates, fraud, land disputes, nuisance, administrative law and constitutional law and has appeared before all tiers of the Judiciary including before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in the famous ‘section 34’ litigation, where he was led by eminent Queen’s Counsel. His particular interest in the field of corporate law was deepened after completing his master’s degree (LLM) with emphasis on corporate governance at the University of Toronto.

In recent times (2017-2019), Mr. Vijai Deonarine has assisted Mr. Prakash Deonarine as Junior Advocate in the management and obtaining of 29 judgments (exceeding of 300 million dollars) in cases pertaining to breaches of FIDIC (Federation Internationale des Ingenieurs Conseils) type construction contracts under the lead of Mr. Prakash Deonarine, and successfully undertaking potentially the largest attachment of debt (garnishee) proceedings in Trinidad and Tobago.

Mr. Deonarine is a respected, core member of the G&D team, who uses his past experience as a tutor to assist Mr. Prakash Deonarine in honing the instructing and advocacy skills of the Junior Associates.
