The Firm

Our Story

This Firm of Attorneys can trace its history back to George Fitzpatrick through to Norman Girwar and now Girwar & Deonarine.

George Fitzpatrick

George Fitzpatrick qualified as a Solicitor and set up practice in the then Borough of San Fernando in the late 1930’s.  This practice was essentially a Magistrate’s Court practice as well as a fair amount of Conveyancing was done, mostly relating to the well to do families in San Fernando and outlying districts.

Norman Girwar

Norman Girwar was articled to George Fitzpatrick and after qualifying as a Solicitor, he acquired the practice of the former in the late 1940’s.  Mr. Girwar distinguished himself (in addition to Law) in Public Service and served as a Borough Councilor in San Fernando and on Several Commissions and Committees relating to Religion and Agriculture.  He was also a founding Director of The National Commercial Bank of Trinidad and Tobago Limited.

Norman Girwar’s name is synonymous with Cane Farming, since it was he who founded the Trinidad Islandwide Cane Farmers Association and served this Association creditably for over (20) years.  The Firm Norman Girwar & Company had a large Conveyancing practice relating essentially to the Cane Farmers and the Agricultural Sector.  It began as a “grassroots” practice extending to and as far as Cedros and encompassing Barrackpore, Princes Town on to Chaguanas and all the Cane Farming areas in South Trinidad.

This Clientele has remained with the Firm to this day and work from the South of Trinidad in large measure, forms the backbone of the Practice.

Norman Girwar though was able to attract many wealthy Moneylenders in the South and through this source of capital was able to sustain and develop a lucrative Mortgage Practice which expanded the Firm.  Mr. Girwar himself was recognized nationally and was awarded the Chaconia Gold Medal for his contribution to Agriculture and Community Service.

Vishnu Deonarine

Vishnu Deonarine, one of the Senior Partners was articled to Mr. Girwar and qualified as a Solicitor in 1974.  Together they formed the Firm Girwar & Deonarine and made efforts to add to the existing base of clients and to develop a substantial corporate clientele.

Prakash DEONARINE

After the death of Mr. Girwar, Vishnu Deonarine introduced his brother, Prakash Deonarine (Senior Partner) to the Firm early on and later, Michael Kalliecharan, Vijai Deonarine and Susan Moolchan as well as several other associate attorneys. The Firm has now grown in size and capability including for the preparation of Debentures and Mortgages for Commercial Banks, Merchant Banks and Investment Finance as well as a substantial Civil Litigation portfolio.

Through an emphasis on research and practical solutions to problems, our Firm focuses heavily on serving the needs of its clients with advice that is pragmatic so as to suit the needs and demands of its clients’ commercial goals. Our team of Attorneys at Girwar & Deonarine is able to reduce and in the majority of cases, eliminate any need for external advice, ultimately reducing the time and cost of providing solutions to the Client.
